How to style the classic leather mini skirt
Leather skirts are HUGE this year! In long and short lengths, you can't go wrong. But we're here to talk about how to style the classic mini length.
These are SO fabulous, and so easy to style, we wanted to share some pointers so that everyone can get on top of this incredible, timeless wardrobe staple.
We had so much fun styling these last night! I was sold on absolutely every outfit from casual tees and sneakers looks to faux faur coats to layered sporty looks! But the bodysuit and bum bag combo was a personal fave! The Camilla Abingdon Palace Puffer looked UNREAL!
But first, let's talk about how to get the best fit and where they should sit on your body to be the most flattering on all body types.
How to get the best fit
These classic leather skirts are quite an easy fit being a slight A line design. This means they will fit you easily in the bottom and hips - you will find it diffiult to get this wrong! The place you need these to fit properly is the waist andwe have found them to be very true to size/a bit snug. If you're between sizes, go up a size for comfort on the waist. Even if you're not between sizes, you can easily wear the next size up if you'd prefer a looser fit on the waist so it doesn't dig in. Nothing worse than feeling uncomfortable. And as you can see in the video, going up a size hasn't impacted the way the skirt looks at all on Courtney, it's just given her a lot more comfort! And given Courtney will likely wear hers mostly with loose tees and tops it's not an issue. If you intend to wear your leather mini skirt mainly with fitted tops and you don't mind a firm waist, stick to your regular size.
Courtney is a true size 6 in the waist but a 6-8 in the hips and both the 6 and 8 fit her, she chose an 8 for comfort.
These skirts are made from quite thick and very durable, pebbled leather. These are going to last and last and last! Especially if you take care of them (keep an eye out for our blog on leather care coming soon!). The A line design helps ensure the longevity of the skirt because there is no pressure on the seams and you can run, jump, play with the kids, sit, stand, and everything in between with ease without worrying about putting any pressure on the seams of this skirt. It's an excellent, long term investment.
And now we'll show you why....
Here are the many INCREDIBLE looks of the Elka Collective Carrie Leather Skirt in Black or Navy!
How to style the classic leather mini skirt
T shirts and sneakers
This one was a no-brainer but we started with a t shirt and sneakers - a great, no frills, easy outfit that looks great! t's probably not the WOW outfit that would make you splash out $299 on a great quality leather skirt, but it will come in super handy when you're looking for something easy and stylish to wear. Play dates, school pick up, casual lunches with friends, weekend birthday parties etc.
It's always good to have something eas to throw on for those and once you have this baby in your wardrobe you are going to be set for all occassions.
Grab one of our favourite Apero tees when you grab this baby and you will be well on your way to super cool casual outfits showcasing your high quality leather skirt! Or step things up a notch with a Camilla tee with a great print and embellishment for just that little bit more pizzaz (these also looks great dropped off the shoulder and worn with heels for a girls night out!).
A simple tee looks exceptional with these leather skirts, but kick things up a notch with a fabulous Camilla tee like the Rainbow Room tee above or Hampton Hive Tee below.
Sweaters and sneakers are also a great combo for the cooler months and we are LOVING the Ginger and Smart Generation Sweat!
Sporty
Leather mini skirts are PERFECT for a sporty look your friends will be envious of. And it's really easy to pull off! Just pair your leather skirt with sporty tees, jumpers and jackets. Finish off with a crisp pair of white sneakers or add a heel for that sports luxe look we love.
We are loving this on trend combo (gunmental grey is SO hot right now!). This is the brand new PE Nation Momentum Puffer Jacket and Momentum Hoodie with the Elka Collective Carrie Leather Skirt.
From here, add faux fur and heels and you have a sports luxe look that can't be beaten! (also works with sneakers for an EPIC and very luxe casual look!)
Prints
Leather skirts pair so beautifully with prints. They're great quality and pairing great quality leather with a print makes both fabrics pop. We also love layering print on print with leather skirts for a super luxe look that looks professionally styled every time.
This layered print look with the Camilla Abingdon Palace Hooded Puffer Jacket and Lady Lodge Body Suit is EPIC! Very difficult to beat! Especially accessorised with the Abingdon Palace Beaded Bumbag!
And you can't go wrong with a round neck kaftan front tucked into your leather skirt. We are loving the deep, moody tones of the Camilla Swinging Sixties Round Neck Kaftan with its gorgeous pops of paisley. The silk also showcases so beautifully against the leather and feels absolutely divine to wear.
Leather skirts are the perfect complement to your Camilla. If you're a big Camilla fan, you need a leather skirt in your wardrobe at all times to get the most out of your Camilla. Give it a go and see! We're not wrong. Leather skirts elevate your Camilla styling to expert stylist level and give your Camilla a point of difference to mix up your looks. You can't get it wrong with Camilla and leather skirts!
Layered and playing with texture
Leather skirts are the perfect simple piece to layer with and play with texture. Knits, silks and everything in between look sensational against the simplicity of leather and the luxury of both fabrics is hard to beat!
We love the Camilla Hampton Hive Throwover belted over the Elka Collective Carrie Leather Skirt for a luxe layered look.
Mixing textures is a great way of tricking the human eye into thinking your outfit is expertly styled. Our eyes are drawn to different textures. Our brain then kicks in, admiring the fabrics, wanting to touch them, imaginging what they feel like, imagining the juxtaposition of each fabric against each other. This is a stylist's big secret tip - you can't fail with an outfit that plays textures off against each other. They always look cool!
Leather works so well with silks, wools, faux fur etc so play with these textures and see the outfit come to life.
Dressy
Leather skirts are THE PERFECT dressy, girls night outfit. They scream "I AM SO BLOODY COOL AND I KNOW STYLE" and look so great all your friends will be envious of your style. Girls will notice you from across the room and wish they were as cool as you. You know those girls we look at and wonder how they hell they got so cool? This can be YOU with the right items, styled well. And leather skirts are definitely one of those IT GIRL items that will instantly elevate your style. They're also so easy to wear you'll want to wear them all the time and then suddenly you're that COOL GIRL! BOOM!
So to get that cool-girl factor on a night out or for a birthday party or slightly dressier occasion, pair your leather skirt with your fave heels and a tee, or kick things up a notch with a gorgeous silk cami, body suit, kaftan or even the double frill maxi skirts worn as a strapless top.
We ADORE the Camilla Camden Moon Double Frill Maxi Skirt worn as a top with these gorgeous leather skirts. What a great way to get extra wear out of both items and what a stunning, unexpected combo that seriously works! Round Neck Kaftans work beautifully as well and can be styled so many ways.
We love the Camilla Lady Lodge Body Suit with our Elka Collective Carrie Leather Skirts for the ultimate stylish and sophisticated girls night outfit!
But what do I wear with them when it's cold?
Obviously being leather, a leather jacket is probably out the window in most circumstances. You would need A LOT of fabric between the skirt and a leather jacket to pull off the leather on leather look (think great, patterned, long line or draped tees or layering knits etc (all with a long line to the rest of the look so you get some separation and texture between the jacket and the pants).
It can be done! But easier looks to pull off are:
Sports sweats
As demonstrated above, sports sweats look GREAT with leather skirts. Give the sports luxe look a go!
Denim jackets
Denim jackets look great with leather skirts. Especially with longer line tees and knits underneath.
Puffer jackets
This season's hottest trend (puffer jackets) pair perfectly with leather skirts.
We LOVE the Camilla Abingdon Palace Hooded Puffer Jacket with our leather skirts.
And the PE Nation Momentum Puffer Jacket is KILLING it for that gorgeous sports luxe look we love!
Blazers
Blazers look GREAT with leather skirts especially the longer, boxier boyfriend style blazers.
Bomber jackets
We love a great bomber and they definitely look the BOMB (geddit?) with leather skirts. The trick with most cropped jackets is to keep a longer layer underneath to tie the whole look together and give it that chic, layered, well styled look.
Faux fur jackets
Faux fur pairs perfectly with leather skirts. You can't go wrong with any of our fab faux furs and these great leather skirts.
So there you have it! These are our top tips on how to get the best fit for you, and how to style this season's hottest leather skirts.
